Melanotan2
Melanotan2 was designed to investigate the body's natural tanning response as a defense mechanism against UV radiation. By mimicking Alpha-MSH, it stimulates the production of eumelanin (dark pigment) via the MC1 receptor.
In addition to its pigmentary properties, its cyclic structure provides enhanced stability and potency over the native hormone, allowing for the study of its cross-reactivity with other receptors in the melanocortin system, specifically those related to satiety and sexual function.
Research Synergy & Pathways
Melanogenesis & MC1R Activation: Studying the rate of melanin synthesis and the density of pigment distribution in epidermal cell models.
Energy Homeostasis (MC4R): Investigating the peptide’s role in appetite suppression and lipid metabolism via the activation of hypothalamic melanocortin 4 receptors.
Sexual Function Research: Analysis of the "aphrodisiac" properties of MT-2, believed to be mediated through central nervous system pathways rather than local vascular effects.
Photoprotection Studies: Researching whether increased eumelanin density provides a measurable reduction in DNA damage caused by UV-B exposure in laboratory tissue.
